Pune Police Investigate Shocking Murder After Woman’s Body Found Hidden in Sofa

In a tragic and disturbing case, Pune police have launched a murder investigation following the discovery of 24-year-old Swapnali Umesh Pawar’s body, hidden inside the storage compartment of her sofa-cum-bed. Her husband, Umesh Pawar, who had been searching for her for two days, was unaware that her body lay concealed in the very furniture he had been sleeping on.

Swapnali, a resident of Hundekar Vasti near Hadapsar, was last in contact with her husband on the morning of November 7. Umesh, a cab driver, had called her from Beed, where he was working at the time. When he returned to Pune and found her missing, he searched across the city, only to make the shocking discovery in their own home on Saturday morning. After noticing valuables were missing, Umesh opened the sofa storage unit and found Swapnali’s body.

Phursungi police responded quickly, and an autopsy confirmed that Swapnali had been strangled, with visible nail marks on her neck. “We believe she was strangled to death,” Senior Inspector Mangal Modhawe said. Investigators suspect that the killer may have been someone known to Swapnali, as there were no signs of forced entry.

Deputy Commissioner of Police R Raja noted that the suspect’s phone has remained off since the body was discovered. Authorities have confirmed Umesh’s absence from Pune during the crime and believe that the suspect was a frequent visitor to the couple’s home, even staying there occasionally. Assistant Commissioner Ashwini Rakh shared that fingerprints and canine tracking have provided leads, and CCTV footage from the area is under review to identify the suspect.

An FIR has been filed for murder and robbery, and police are actively pursuing clues to bring the perpetrator to justice.
