In a recent breakthrough, Uttar Pradesh’s Special Task Force (STF) and the Mumbai Crime Branch arrested Shiv Kumar, one of the main suspects involved in the murder of former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique. He was apprehended in Nanpara, Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh on Sunday. Four other individuals—Anurag Kashyap, Gyan Prakash Tripathi, Akash Srivastava, and Akhileshendra Pratap Singh—were also detained for allegedly sheltering Kumar and aiding his attempts to escape the country.
This brings the total number of arrests in the case to 23. Baba Siddique, aged 66, was tragically shot by three gunmen on October 12 in Mumbai’s Bandra area, just outside the office of his son, MLA Zeeshan Siddique. Police investigations suggest the involvement of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s younger brother, Anmol, who is reportedly in Canada. However, the precise motive for Siddique’s murder remains unclear.
According to police reports, Shiv Kumar was the one who fired at Siddique. He was accompanied by Gurmail Singh from Haryana and Dharamraj Kashyap from Uttar Pradesh. While Dharamraj carried a chili spray, Shiv opened fire before it could be used. At the time of the attack, three constables were present with Siddique but were unable to prevent the fatal shooting, as reported by DCP Crime Branch Datta Nalawade last month.
